Given below is the part-3 of the step by step process of installing Oracle R on IBM AIX server. Refer to part-1 and part-2 first in case you landed directly on this page.

3-  Installing Oracle R Enterprise on the Client

Given below flowchart illustrate the process of Oracle R Enterprise installation on the server. Note that step-0 has been done already (see environment details mentioned earlier). Here we need to perform step #1, #2 & #3 as encircled in the below diagram.

3.1-  Install Oracle R Distribution on the Client

  1. Go to the Oracle Open Source Software Download page for Oracle R Distribution: https://oss.oracle.com/ORD/ We have downloaded ORD 3.3.0 for Windows. ORD-3.3.0-win.zip
  2. Unzip to extract the executable file. ORD-3.3.0-win.exe
  3. Double-click the executable file to start the installation of Oracle R Distribution.
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.zc

3.2-  Install Oracle R Enterprise Packages

Follow these steps to download and install the Oracle R Enterprise packages:

To download the Oracle R Enterprise packages:

  1. Navigate to the Oracle R Enterprise Downloads page on the Oracle Technology Network: https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/database-technologies/r/r-enterprise/downloads/index.html
  2. Accept the License Agreement.
  3. Download Client packages for Windows. For this installation, ORE version is 1.5.1. (same as server). File downloaded is shown in below screenshot.

4. Unzip the file; the “client” sub-directory is created which contains:

5. Copy above zip files (packages) into a new directory “oreclientpkgs” in Oracle Client directory as given below

Oracle client directory:
C:\oracle\product\11.2.0\client_1

New directory created for ORE packages
C:\oracle\product\11.2.0\client_1\oreclientpkgs

After copying to oreclientpkgs directory, here is the screenshot:

Before you install ORE packages, quickly look at the variable settings.

6. To install the Oracle R Enterprise packages from the R Console, Start R console from command prompt as shown in below screenshot.

7. Install the packages by running below commands in R:

install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREbase_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREcommon_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREdm_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREdplyr_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREeda_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREembed_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREgraphics_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREmodels_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREpredict_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREstats_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/ORExml_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/ORE_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)

here is the screenshot of the output.

Warning: During installation of the packages I faced below error message:

install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oreclientpkgs/OREbase_1.5.1.zip", repos=NULL)
package ‘OREbase’ successfully unpacked and MD5 sums checked
Warning in install.packages :
unable to move temporary installation ‘C:\Program Files\R\R-3.3.0\library\file2f9845f02048\OREbase’ to ‘C:\Program Files\R\R-3.3.0\library\OREbase’

Solution: There could be two reasons for this error.
a) Permissions issue on the directory.
b) Antivirus is blocking the file move.
In my case, it was an antivirus issue so I disabled it temporarily.

3.3-  Install Oracle R Enterprise Supporting Packages

Follow these steps to download and install the Oracle R Enterprise packages:

  3. Download Client packages for Windows. For this installation, ORE version is 1.5.1. (same as server). File downloaded is shown in below screenshot.

4. Unzip the file; the “supporting” subdirectory is created which contains:

5. Copy above zip files (packages) into a new directory “oresupportpkgs” in Oracle Client directory as given below

Oracle client directory:
C:\oracle\product\11.2.0\client_1

New directory created for ORE packages
C:\oracle\product\11.2.0\client_1\oresupportpkgs

After copying to oresupportpkgs directory, here is the screenshot:

6. Open R and install the packages by running below commands in R:

install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oresupportpkgs/arules_1.5-0.zip", repos=NULL)
install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oresupportpkgs/Cairo_1.5-9.zip", repos=NULL)

install.packages("c:/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1/oresupportpkgs/statmod_1.4.29.zip", repos=NULL)

here is the screenshot of the output…

At this point the installation steps are complete. In the last part-4, we will review the ways to verify the installation, running R and basic validation.
